Vets - News & Results 2025
9-Hole bowmaker competition
On Thursday 25th September eight teams were welcomed to the Bristol and Clifton Golf Club for the annual 9hole Vets competition which was this year a Bowmaker.
Our thanks go to Sue Dawes who acted as starter , the B&C team of Alex, Georgina and Ian, the catering team , Jane Watts and everyone who contributed to the success of the day. The competition brings together ladies, no longer playing 18 holes, ladies entering their first competition and ladies supporting their club members.
Everyone said they enjoyed the days golf and the opportunity to meet up afterwards and said they were looking forward to meeting again in 2026

Rodway Hill Golf Club
The Autumn Trophies was hosted by Rodway Hill Golf Club. The competition featured a championship stroke play event, which was also scored as a stableford competition. 42 ladies (including 12 home players) participated despite a day of mixed weather.
The input and contributions by Ben Fisk and Liam and all staff at Rodway Hill were greatly appreciated and ensured the event’s smooth running.
A special mention to Rose Hook (Vets Rep) for her input and to the willing Starters for the day, Jill Keates and Maureen Paul.

Gloucs Vets v Gloucs Junior Girls
Bristol and Clifton
28th August 4BBB
Well the rain had to come didn’t it and it did - in torrents on the day of the final match of our season! Always a popular fixture in our calendar - a great mixing of the young and those not so young but with a wealth of experience! My thanks must go to Angela Wakeley for kindly stepping up to be Captain on the day. Due to the shocking weather all games retired early and the results were taken from where the games were abandoned. The Vets secured a narrow victory over some very enthusiastic and talented young Juniors. Our future is bright. As is tradition the Lady Vets treated the Girls to their well earned supper which is always much appreciated.
Summer Bowmaker 2025
Wednesday 6th August
Forest Hills Golf Club
We experienced ideal conditions at Forest Hills, and the 31 participating teams enjoyed sunshine and a gentle breeze throughout the day. Some superb golf was observed across the pond onto the 18th green, and all players seemed to come off the course in high spirits. Players had the opportunity to relax on the patio and enjoy the delightful sunshine while savouring some excellent refreshments.
We extend our gratitude to all the staff at Forest Hills (Tina (Club Manager), Jean Hosford, Gavin, all catering and green staff, who went above and beyond to assist us in hosting the event. Their willingness to help ensured that everything ran very smootly.
As is customary, we were fortunate to enlist two “agreeable” gentlemen to assume the role of starer; however, one became unwell and was commendably substituted by his wife!

Gloucs Vets v Gloucs Lady Past Captains Society
Minchinhampton Old Course
30th July 4BBB
Always a happy and friendly fixture! Some of the ladies playing for the Vets themselves are Past Captains and have played for the other side on occasions! Minchinhampton Old Course was busy as usual with walkers, pic-nicking families and dogs but fortunately not many of the expected livestock! Although our Secretary, Eve had very kindly supplied us all with rubber gloves and poo-bags should we come across any that left unwanted deposits thus spoiling our shots!
Always keenly and very competitively fought, this match resulted in a draw which meant the South retained the trophy. Well done everyone to everyone who won their games - especially the rookies that played in this match.
Gloucs Vets v Monmouthshire Seniors
Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club
1st July
What a treat to visit this very prestigious club - although maybe a little tricky to find?!
16 Ladies from 12 Gloucs clubs were greeted on another warm day - although there was a little welcome rain as we started to come in. The course was long and dry and the ball acted accordingly! Unfortunately another loss for Gloucs but a wonderful day nevertheless, enjoyed by everyone who attended. Thank you to all who travelled the distance.
Gloucs Vets v Oxfordshire Seniors
Tadmarton Heath Golf Club
25th June 4BBB
12 ladies from 9 Gloucs clubs travelled to Tadmarton Heath in sunny Oxfordshire for our regular fixture against Oxfordshire. The course itself was quirky, interesting and again, very dry. We had a mixture of success in our pairing but came away with a draw. Following play we were treated to an exceptional meal in the clubhouse. Oxfordshire gets the medal for best food this season!
North v South match
Stinchcombe Golf Club
20th June
Another very hot day and our biggest match of the season albeit all playing for Gloucs!
32 ladies split into two teams of 16 represented the North and South of the county. This has always been a very popular fixture in our calendar and well supported. That said, for various reasons 20 ladies dropped out of this match in the lead up to the match and replacements sought several times! Thank you so much to those of you who stepped in at the last moment. Fortunately Stinchcombe isn’t too long and many matches got in quickly (and avoided too much of the searing heat of the day). We enjoyed a lovely two course meal and a few stories of the day. The South won the match.
Gloucs Vets v Wiltshire
Cirencester Golf Club
20th May 4BBB
16 ladies representing 11 Gloucs clubs welcomed Wiltshire to Cirencester in full sunshine for our first home match of the year. Despite having this advantage Wiltshire won convincingly with a very strong and competitive team. Everyone enjoyed a two-course meal when eventually all were back in the club house - several of the matches went onto the 18th!

Gloucs Vets v Somersets Seniors
Worlebury Golf Club
8th May 2025 4BBB
Fourteen ladies from 8 Gloucs clubs travelled down the sunny M5 in May to play a welcoming and enthusiastic side from Somerset. Unfortunately despite several attempts to find a replacement we were one player down on the day so very kindly the Somerset Captain agreed to wear our team colours for the day! Everyone enjoyed the hospitality at Worlebury and despite some hard fought matches Gloucs lost the match.
Brockworth Salver 2025
Wednesday 7th May 2025
Henbury Golf Club
The weather and course conditions at Henbury were ideal for the 96 ladies (23 from the Home Club) who ventured out for our first Competition of the year. Thanks go to Henbury GC for hosting the event and to Judith Elford and Alison Hooper for organising an abundance of spotters and ensuring that we were well looked after on the day.
Thanks also to Kirsty Hornung, Hilary and Mike Mason for taking on the role of Starter.
There were a few issues with Handicaps due to WHS not updating information overnight. Fortunately, these errors were picked up when the scores were being entered onto the system and Carole Greenup was able to rectify the situation.
